North America

TMC services are available in the USA and also under development for Canada. Services use FM RDS/RBDS* TMC but are also sent using HD Radio and XM satellite radio broadcasts.

Total Traffic Network from Clear Channel uses its own network of reporters, traffic cameras, helicopters and aeroplanes to collect traffic information. The Total Traffic Network TMC service is available on a subscription basis on a wide range of products, including selected BMW models, selected Garmin nuvi, Mio, TomTom and Audiovox navigation systems and in the Avis/Budget Where2 navigation system. Over 49 cities are covered (December 2006).

XM NavTraffic, powered by NAVTEQ Traffic, is the 1st nationwide satellite-based data traffic information service that enables an overlay of current traffic conditions. The best available traffic information, aggregated by NAVTEQ Traffic from multiple sources, is provided via continuous satellite broadcast to an on-board vehicle navigation system.

NAVTEQ Traffic™ supplies the information for XM NavTraffic™ (http://www.xmradio.com/navtraffic/index.xmc for more information), available in over 44 cities (December 2006).

NAVTEQ Traffic™: comprehensive traffic information provided in one feed that includes the best of multiple sources of traffic information. This traffic information is referenced to the NAVTEQ digital map database to provide personalized information. And it covers all three types of traffic information, including planned incident (such as construction and event-related closures), unplanned incident (accidents and breakdowns), and flow (travel times along each road segment). Aggregated, processed, and delivered to the vehicle, the NAVTEQ traffic product provides drivers with personalized information in real time.

*The FM radio data standard in the USA is technically RBDS (Radio Broadcast Data System), not RDS, but the differences are minor.
